In Assam, more than 30 groups, including the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU), have decided to protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). AASU President Uttpal Sharma announced that during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s state visit, a 12-hour hunger strike and agitation will be held in all districts on March 9. Sharma stated that several cases against the CAA are currently pending in the Supreme Court.

In Assam, more than 30 groups, including the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU), have decided to stage protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). AASU President Uttpal Sharma announced that during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s state visit, a 12-hour hunger strike and agitation will be held in all districts on March 9. Sharma stated that several cases against the CAA are currently pending in the Supreme Court, and therefore, making rules and implementing the CAA would be a serious injustice to the people. He said that the people of Assam have never accepted the CAA, and they will oppose any steps to enforce it. We will continue our democratic and peaceful protests against the central government’s decision, alongside legal battles

The agitation against the CAA will commence from March 4th.

Sharma stated that the agitation against the CAA will begin on March 4th, with motorcycle rallies being organized in every district headquarters. He mentioned that subsequently, torch rallies will be held against it in every district headquarters. Sharma added that when the Prime Minister visits Assam on March 8th, AASU and 30 other organizations will light candles in front of the images of the five youths who were killed by police firing during the anti-CAA protests in 2019.

Demanding Intervention from President Draupadi Murmu.

“In Assam, opposition parties have demanded intervention from President Draupadi Murmu to cancel the CAA, stating that if their demand is not met, they will launch democratic protests across the state. The United Opposition Front of Assam (UOFA) submitted a memorandum to Murmu through Governor Gulab Chand Kataria.

Activists to Approach Supreme Court Against CAA

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has claimed that there is no relevance for any protest against the CAA at this time, and people can approach the Supreme Court against the law. Sarma stated at a press conference that Parliament, which passed the law, is not supreme because the Supreme Court is above it and it can strike down any law, as it did in the case of electoral bonds.

He stated that there is no relevance for protests against the CAA because movements cannot be effective concerning any law passed by Parliament. DGP Gyanendra Pratap Singh issued a warning against the threat of statewide shutdown against the CAA, stating that due to the protests, organizers could be held responsible for compensating the daily financial losses amounting to 1,643 crore rupees.
